She Has A Boyfriend? Walk Away!

What to do when a woman tells you she has a boyfriend so she calls you if it does not work out. Have you ever heard that a particular woman had romantic interest in you, but when you approached her about getting her phone number for a date, she said she had a boyfriend? It’s a little bit shocking to walk up to a woman totally expecting her to be excited you came over to say hello because you think she wants to date you, but then having her tell you she has a boyfriend. I learned a long time ago not to trust rumors on the street about certain women being single, having interest in you, etc. The following is an e-mail from a guy who heard a girl he goes to school with liked him and wanted to meet him. He initially reaches out to her on twitter, but she either ignores him or does not see his message. The next time he sees her on campus she tells him she has a boyfriend surprisingly. He e-mails asking if he handled the situation properly. My comments are (in bold brackets like this) in the body of his e-mail:

Hi Coach,

There is this girl at my school. I was told she has been following me around, and that she told one of my classmates she would like to talk to me. (Information like that can often be suspect, so take it with a grain of salt. If a girl really likes you, she will make it obvious and try to be where she knows you are going to be. I would say to the person telling you of her interest, “Oh yea? Well tell her to come and find me. I’d love to talk with her.” Don’t go seeking her out. Guys who already have lots of women who like them won’t chase. They simply don’t have the time.) So a week later we see each other at school, but she didn’t come over. So I added her on twitter. Then I sent her a message: “Hi how r u doin?” I waited a week, but she didn’t reply. (That was weak stalker-like behavior. You should have talked to her in person if you really wanted to know for sure by gauging her interest.) So yesterday at school I went over to her and asked if she is “Roberta,” and she said “yea.” Then I told her I sent her a message on twitter, and was expecting some reply, but that she didn’t reply. She said she didn’t normally come on twitter. Then I said “okay, I have to go now, you mind giving me your number so that I can call one-day to say hi?” To my surprise she told me she had a boyfriend. Then I told her I just wanted to get to know her. (I would have said, “well shoot me a text and let me know if it doesn’t work out. I hear you’re a nice girl and I’d like to chat with you sometime.” and then walk away. If she really wanted you as backup in case things did not work out with her boyfriend, she would have pulled out her phone and asked for your number. If she did not she would have simply said, “sure” but never pulled out her phone and asked for your number. You know then for sure if she is or isn’t really interested and can walk away without an awkward situation for both of you.) She said she needs to think about it, (Translation: “No.”) but she will send me a message on twitter. Then I said what if I give her mine? She said it’s the same, but she needs to think about it. (Translation: “No, I don’t want your phone number.”) Then I said I am not sure I will be coming to classes the whole of next week. She asked why and then I told her I will be traveling with my friends to London. Then she said she will let me know when I come back. (I seriously doubt she will even bring it up and will act like it never happened. So you have to be prepared for that possibility.) I don’t know if I did the right thing, (You took a swing at a pitch. You miss 100% of the pitches you don’t swing at. At least you tried, but you need to clean up your game.) or if there is any chance of changing things? (Nope. Walk away. If she likes you but really does have a boyfriend and is not just BS’ing you about an imaginary boyfriend to get rid of you, she will get in touch if it doesn’t work out.)
