Henry Ford, the inventor of the automobile and founder of Ford Motor Company, once said, “I do not believe a man can ever leave his business. He ought to think of it by day and dream of it by night.” As a lifelong entrepreneur, I have found this statement to be true. I am obsessed with what I do. I think about it day and night. If I’m not working on something related to my business at the office, I’m still thinking about it in the back of my mind every waking moment.
I love what I do! I made the choice to do this because it is my passion and I have a burning desire to be great at everything I do! The only way to be great at anything in life, is you must do what you love. “You never achieve success unless you like what you are doing.”-Dale Carnegie. Are you obsessed with what you do? If you are doing what God created you to do, you will be passionately obsessed with it also.
Steve Jobs said in his 2005 Stanford commencement speech: “Have the courage to follow your heart, curiosity and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” One of the reasons why I have always been successful at achieving my goals, is because I am always studying the success of other outrageously successful people. I learned their mindsets, their model of the world, how they look at and deal with challenges and I especially pay attention when they talk about the things that are most important to them. Dale Carnegie was one of the world’s first billionaires in the late 1800s. He put all of his most important life lessons and teachings about success into a course called “How To Win friends and Influence People”. It’s a masterpiece of timeless and brilliant knowledge that applies more than ever today, than it did over 100 years ago when Dale started sharing his knowledge with the world.
“Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” ~ Les Brown. By applying the life lessons and teachings of those who are more successful than you, eventually you will get the same types of results in your own life. When I learn something from others, I don’t just learn it. I actually apply it. Knowledge is not power! Knowledge is only potential power. Knowledge only becomes power when you take action based upon it.
When I am in the beginning stages of creating a new entrepreneurial venture and trying to figure out and perfect my business model, even though I know most of my ideas and the things I’m going to try are not going to work, I always believe in my heart that I am about to have a breakthrough. “Think of yourself as on the threshold of unparalleled success.” ~ Andrew Carnegie. Every time I take action on an idea I think will work, no matter what happens, I know I will learn something useful. That is the brilliance of taking action. Your action causes results (good or bad) which you can study, learn from and then try something different based upon what you learned. Over the days, weeks, months and years, a new business model that works slowly develops. Much like a child develops over time in its mother’s womb. After nine months of gestation, the child is born and still takes about 18 years to develop into an efficient, productive and self sufficient member of society.
When you are taking action and most of the things you try are not going to work, you don’t care about the failures. Why? Even the failures are exciting when you have a passion for something. Everything you try gives you results of some kind that you can use to fine-tune the next thing you are going to try. Repetition is the mother of skill. If you are not taking consistent action to learn, then you are not going to become good at what you want to become. It’s a process of trial and error. When you do not have a passion for what you are doing, making sales calls, getting rejected, running into obstacles, etc. becomes increasingly frustrating to you over time. As your frustration grows so does your resentment. Most people will only work just hard enough to keep from getting fired. The more you dislike something, the harder you have to work to conceal it from your employers and coworkers. For me, any time when I was working for other people and my level of unhappiness and dissatisfaction rose to a level that was no longer pleasant, I always started looking for the next opportunity that excited me.
For every worker, employee, entrepreneur, business owner, etc. who wishes to achieve great wealth and riches, the most important thing they must focus on is finding a way to add more value than anyone else. The more value you add to people’s lives, the bigger your audience will become, the more fans you will have and the more customers you will have who will pay you for your product or service. For an entrepreneur who has an idea for a new business, his idea is always some way to add value to people’s lives either in the form of a useful product or service. “Wealth, like happiness, is never attained when sought after directly. It comes as a by-product of providing a useful service.”- Henry Ford.
If you are an entrepreneur, or you want to become an entrepreneur and you want to reduce the emotional impact of obstacles, challenges and setbacks, then it is absolutely essential that you only spend or you find a way to slowly become someone who spends the majority of their time doing something they absolutely love and would do for free if they had to because it brings them so much joy and satisfaction. Having a passion and loving what you do makes you feel amazing! Challenges and obstacles are always going to present themselves to you. “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” ~ Henry Ford. However, those challenges and obstacles are a lot bigger and scarier, and therefore larger obstacles to your achievement and success if you are spending the minutes of your day doing something only because of the wealth you think you will acquire doing it, or because it’s what you think you should do.
If you want to reach your full potential and become the greatest success you can be, then don’t spend your time living someone else’s life. Your time is limited here on planet Earth. “People only do their best at things they truly enjoy.” -Jack Nicklaus.
