Are you right now, moving with a purpose and focusing on taking action and doing only the most important things as they relate to your most important goals, dreams and outcomes? Have you prioritized your daily to do list by working on accomplishing in order, the items on your to do list as they relate to your most important goals, dreams and outcomes?
In other words, are you focusing on doing activities in the order of their importance to helping you accomplish your most important goals? Or are you busy doing the most mundane and unimportant tasks on your to do list such as cleaning out and organizing your desk, because they keep you busy so you feel like you are accomplishing something? However, deep down you know wasting your time working like this, and you are doing nothing to bring your grandest goals and dreams closer to you, but actually pushing them further away and into the future?
In every moment of every day you are making a conscious choice. You are either focusing your time and being busy doing things that are important and essential to accomplishing your most important life, career, business, relationship, etc. goals, focusing on enjoying your day off or you are wasting the minutes of your day and living a life of quiet desperation. Are you right now, doing everything you could be doing to improve your health, your finances, your business, your career, your relationships, etc.? Are you satisfied with the level of effort that you are personally giving to make your life the masterpiece you have always dreamed it could be? Are you happy with your present level of success in all areas of your life?
You must participate in your own rescue. If you are not where you want to be in your life right now, the only thing that is going to change your circumstances is a) an exciting and compelling vision for your life that inspires you and b) taking moment by moment relentless action doing the things which are necessary and required to achieve your most important goals and dreams.
In order to break through your fears and what is holding you back from taking the actions that you know you need to take, you need to get emotional leverage on yourself. You need to change the way you look at and think about things. When you feel like putting something off that you know you should do, ask yourself this, “What are the painful consequences I will experience in the future by not taking the action I know I need to take? What am I going to miss out on in two years, five years, 10 years, 20 years, etc.?”
Now that you have made yourself aware of and contemplated the painful consequences of being lazy, unfocused and not taking the action you know you need to take, you now want to remind yourself of all of the emotionally compelling, positive and powerful things, people, events, etc. that will happen to you in two years, five years, 10 years, 20 years, etc., if you take the actions you know you need to take in this moment.
In the previous two paragraphs I discuss how to use pain and pleasure to get emotional leverage on yourself to ensure you take the actions you know you need to take. It does not matter what you failed to do 30 seconds ago, two hours ago, two weeks ago, two months ago, two years ago, etc. The only thing that matters is what you do right now.
If you have a compelling vision for your life, you use pain and pleasure to get emotional leverage on yourself to take the daily action you know you need to take and you also take time to celebrate your victories, you will be able to lay your head down at night and be proud of your efforts. Action breeds confidence and courage. Inaction breeds fear and doubt. That’s something to think about.
Every day is an opportunity to make your life the way you want it to be. Anything is possible when you work toward it, one day at a time. Skip a day, and you lose momentum. Try to do it all at once, and you burn out. Steadily, consistently work, making every day count, and you will reach your goals. Today is a chance to grow – to do a little bit more than you did yesterday, a little bit better, a little bit more effectively. Anyone can do a little more, learn a little more, and grow a little more each day. Soon, with consistent effort, those “little bits” add up to major accomplishments. Is there something you want to change? Today is the day to start changing it. Is there a new customer you want to land? Today is the day to start making it happen. Do you need to lose weight? Today is the day to start doing it. Not next Monday or next month – today. You deserve to reach your goals as soon as possible. Control today and you control your life.”-Ralph Marston
